I am Justin Gilligan, one of the owners of TheraFit Kids. And I have been there, too. Both of my daughters have needed therapy, and the challenge to find answers and get direction is real… That is why we decided to become a multi-specialty facility offering physical, occupational, and speech therapy for all ages, along with supplying durable medical equipment.

Our goal was to become a true outpatient rehab center, offering state-of-the-art equipment and highly trained therapists all in one spot. This allows us to have a fully encompassed and well-rounded treatment plan that is focused on getting the most out of therapy for our patients young and old.

“So, How Do We Do This?”

How It Works

Every child has specific needs. There is no one size fits all when it comes to therapy. So we start with an initial evaluation. In this first visit we listen to the parent’s goals as well as the child’s goals. Then we go through a series of special tests that help us to identify exactly what is going on. From there, we build a  unique treatment plan that includes their interests, goals, and your feedback.

Next, we carry out a treatment plan and keep re-evaluating our plan to see if we are getting the progress we desired. In this stage consistency and repetition are vital. Neuroplasticity, or the wiring of neurons in the brain, is built through repetition, and it takes time. So keeping it feeling fun and new are the true gifts of our therapists, making it a place kids LOVE to go!

This leads to our third step of maintaining. Once we help achieve the desired goal, we want to make sure we maintain it. Kids are constantly growing. Spastic muscles can tighten up fast, and we can lose functions that we once had. So in some cases, we keep children on a maintenance program so that we can keep an eye on them in case things begin to change.

What Happens if You Don’t Get Help?

It’s fairly common to feel like you can help your child on your own. For some, trying to manage their child’s health alone may work. However, the result of not getting help could lead to more issues and a loss of precious time to intervene early before things get too bad. Some of the biggest problems we have even seen with kids have been from not seeing them soon enough.

It’s not the parent’s fault; many times, the system is to blame. Without proper guidance parents, are left feeling as though “this is all my child can do” or “I guess my child will never be able to do that, the doctor would know.” We like to remind our parents of this…
