If you feel like you have bad balance or you are constantly afraid of falling — and you think either of those is normal.
That’s understandable, since balance usually gets worse over many months or even years. Many people chalk it up to their age.
Sometimes poor balance might be related to an event (like a stroke or broken bone). But regardless of why your balance is bad, you just need to live with it, right?
If this sounds like you, then you are not alone. We hear this type of thing all the time. In fact, we specialize in balance and improving walking (or gait).
Many of our clients say things to us like:
“I am terrified of falling.”
and…
“I can’t walk on grass or up curbs without feeling like I am going to fall.”
Living in fear can be devastating. Many of our patients love to play golf, hang out with their grandchildren, socialize, or just go on walks.
However, living with bad balance can negatively impact your life. It makes many of the things you love much harder or even impossible to do!

Many of our patients do mention their poor balance to their friends, maybe family, and sometimes even doctors. Often times, they are met with the same responses: pity and little-to-no advice or recommendations.
So, they continue to accept the fact that there is nothing they can do. This can create bad habits because doing nothing often leads to weaker muscles and worse balance.
If you don’t know what you’re doing, then trying to fix your balance on your own or listening to others can be very frustrating.

About the Presenters
Towson, MD

Dr. Erica Bechtol, DPT
Erica is a doctor of physical therapy and the clinical director of our Woodlawn, Maryland, location. She’ll be conducting the balance workshop at our new Baltimore city location on Cold Spring Lane. Erica graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, School of Medicine in 2013 and specialized in gait and balance disorders, including neurological conditions.

Dr. Lauren Fischer, DPT
Lauren is a doctor of physical therapy and the clinical director of our location in Towson, Maryland. She graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. During her studies, Lauren spent time at the National Rehabilitation Center in California, which specializes in treating those with disorders. She is certified in the LSVT Big methodology for treating patients with Parkinson’s disease.
Woodlawn, MD

Dr. Taylor Wiedel, DPT
Taylor has been the clinical director at our Westminster location since October 2019 and is a doctor of physical therapy, having earned her doctorate from the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. Originally from Sykesville, Maryland, she worked at several physical therapy clinics throughout Maryland, providing care to a variety of patients, before coming home to the Therafit Rehab family.
